Microsoft has lodged a complaint with the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), saying changes to the App Store made by Apple in January, March and subsequently meant the company could launch the Xbox Cloud Gaming app for iOS.

In particular, the App Store rules remain a challenge for games on Xbox Cloud Gaming, as Microsoft is unable to comply with them on both technical and economic grounds.

Third-party games on Xbox Cloud Gaming for iOS must be sold as in-app purchases, which means paid service developers have to rewrite the code and pay a 30% commission.

The 30% community fee makes it impossible for Microsoft to monetize cloud gaming services.

Microsoft also takes issue with the rule that prohibits developers from linking to external resources to purchase subscriptions. Cloud gaming services do not count under Apple’s exception.

Apple itself disagrees with Microsoft’s accusations. It believes its rules are feasible, citing Antstream as an example. It is the first game streaming service for iOS, featuring more than 1,300 Atari, Amiga and Nintendo games. [The Verge]
