China is one step closer to excluding Windows from its devices. As The Register reported, the country is fully focused on switching to Linux amid the conflict with the US, but has so far lacked developer support. But now all this may change with the release of the Kylin Linux project.
The goal of the project is to speed up the development of an all-Chinese Kylin Linux distribution. Among the project participants will be developers, as well as colleges and universities.
So far, more than 20 Chinese companies and institutions have joined the project, including the China Advanced Operating Systems Innovation Center.
During this phase, members will work on release planning, platform development, and a community charter. But in the medium and long term, the project participants will strive to optimize the operating system for the latest generation Intel and AMD chips, provide support for RISC-V processors, develop translation levels from x86 to RISC-V, improve the interface and soon.
Kylin was released in 2001 as a kernel for government and military devices, but was based on FreeBSD at the time. Ten years later, in 2010, it switched to Linux and four years later, the Ubuntu version was introduced.
Meanwhile, relations between China and the US are becoming increasingly tense. The US government has accused China of ongoing cyberattacks on its institutions, numerous cyberespionage campaigns, and has also accused Chinese manufacturers like Huawei of planting backdoors in their products, endangering national security.
China, on the other hand, has repeatedly dismissed the accusations as baseless and continues to try to reduce its reliance on Western-made software, hardware and services.
