They are not decoration, why are there red stripes on the car’s odometer?

We all know the various symbols and panels of our cars, although sometimes we panic when something strange appears and we don’t know how to identify it.

However, there are certain brands that we know about, such as being on our odometer, but we don’t know why. What are the red stripes on the car odometer for?

These marks speed limit reminders. Depending on the vehicle, it may be marked on one or all 30, 50 and 130 km/h. 30 km/h is the normal speed limit in European residential areas, 50 km/h is the normal default speed limit in cities and towns around the world.

Even if we enter 130 km/h, we can say that this is the maximum speed on the motorway, although in Spain, as you well know, you cannot drive on these roads at a speed of more than 120 km/h.

You are probably confusing them with those red marks that we see on different spheres at the end of the count. No, we don’t mean this area, because it refers to a limit that, if exceeded, can result in wasting more gasoline or a very dangerous limit for your car.

Many have always believed that either these marks belong to the zone of optimal fuel economy (but logically 30 km / h is very little), or, on the other hand, these are the optimal gearshift speeds in 1st and 2nd, respectively (following the same logic, shifting 3rd gear at 130 km/h is not “optimal”).

It’s not that they have a very useful function, but it is true that on a visual level they can help when it comes to controlling our speed. Although with the development of technology and vehicles, more and more people have a digital screen with great speed.

Now it’s strange that only some brands include this 130 km/h redline. For example, only Audi has them, while BMW or Mercedes do not.
