Scientists have discovered that as we age, the immune system causes harmful inflammation that contributes to cancer development by stimulating the accumulation of pre-tumor macrophages (immune cells) that interfere with the body’s ability to fight tumors. Using preclinical models, the team showed that anakinra, a drug commonly used to treat inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, could be used to block these harmful signals. The intervention effectively reduced cancer growth in older mice, suggesting that targeting inflammation could be a promising cancer prevention strategy.
The study also identified specific immune-related factors that accelerate cancer development in older adults.
