The study, published in the journal Hypertension and presented at the American Heart Association’s meeting on hypertension, shows that approximately 17.3 million Americans, or 6.7% of the adult population, have arms that do not fit the standard cuff size. 6.4% of American adults have arms that are too large to fit into standard cuffs. This discrepancy can lead to inaccurate blood pressure readings, making the devices nearly unusable.

Researchers examined 16 popular blood pressure monitors and found that most cuffs fit arm circumferences between 22 and 42 centimeters. The authors of the study believe the simplest solution is for manufacturers to offer a wider range of cuff sizes.
