Russian Railways (RZD) is working to restore direct passenger service between China and Russia. Both the People’s Republic of China and the Russian side are showing interest in this: the government of the Trans-Baikal Territory is especially interested in resuming transportation, noting that the checkpoint on the highway between the countries is overloaded.

In 2020, following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the borders between Russia and China were closed, including the suspension of passenger rail transport. In 2022, Russia lifted the ban on the departure of citizens, and in April of the same year the land border with China was opened.

In July 2024, Russian Railways launched a ticket purchase service with in-train transfers. Transfers to different seats on a long-distance train can be arranged if there are no tickets available for the entire route.
