Micro- and nanoplastics, small particles formed by the breakdown of larger plastic products, pose a serious threat to the environment due to their persistence and difficulty in breaking down. Traditional 2D microscopy provides limited insight into the degradation processes of these particles. However, the University of Waterloo team’s use of 3D imaging, similar to CT scanning, provided unprecedentedly detailed information about the structure and degradation of microplastics.
The results obtained pave the way for the creation of more efficient waste recycling methods.
