To remedy this situation, the mother accepted a unique procedure in which doctors performed a temporary birth in the sixth month of pregnancy. The baby was removed from the womb, underwent surgery to correct the spinal cord defect, and then returned to the womb to continue its development.
The baby was eventually born at 38 weeks and spent eight days in the neonatal intensive care unit. Despite the surgery, doctors believe the child may have serious mobility issues and may not be able to walk.
