The Children’s Physical Activity and Nutrition (PANIC) study used cutting-edge methods to examine how lifestyle changes during childhood and adolescence affect health over time. Scientists analyzed blood samples from participants and identified changes in 80 metabolites associated with critical processes such as lipid metabolism, inflammation, and gut health. Remarkably, 17 of these metabolites remained unchanged eight years after the initial intervention, demonstrating the long-term impact of early lifestyle changes.
The study revealed significant changes in fatty amides, which play a role in a variety of physiological functions including inflammation control, weight regulation, and neuroprotection. These changes are associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
