Myung-Gi Jeong, an assistant professor of communication and journalism at Auburn University, wanted to understand what happens when people feel compelled to send work emails after dinner and before breakfast. To do so, he conducted a study with a colleague.

As a result, experts have discovered a worrying link between business communication outside of work hours and increased employee burnout . Responding to emails outside of work hours has been linked to decreased productivity, badmouthing of employers, and other negative behaviors.

The study was conducted by surveying 315 full-time U.S. employees across a variety of industries. The data was clear: Communicating about work-related issues after the end of the workday leads to emotional exhaustion, which can lead to unproductive workplace behavior.
