Traditional screening methods, such as endoscopy, have limitations: the procedure is invasive, expensive, requires highly trained specialists, and can only detect 7% of esophageal cancers.
Scientists at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Michigan are developing AI tools that analyze electronic health records to identify patients who should be screened for esophageal cancer and the precancerous condition Barrett’s esophagus. The tools consider more than 7,500 data points, including test results and medical procedures. Their accuracy on the tests reached 84%, significantly exceeding current recommendations.
Such technologies can significantly improve diagnosis and help detect cancer early, which will increase the chances of successful treatment.
