Sberbank will introduce a new function that will allow you to pay for goods marked “18+” using biometrics instead of a passport. This was announced by the head of the bank’s Biometrics department, Oleg Evseev. The new service is being developed in cooperation with the Unified Biometric System and the National Payment Card System and will be available not only to Sberbank’s customers, but also to customers of other banks.

Evseev noted that the project is still at the architectural development stage. In the future, it is planned to coordinate with regulatory bodies, discuss and integrate the service with retailers and other banks. This is important to ensure the correct operation of the new mechanism at all levels.

According to Evseev, currently Russian legislation stipulates that a passport can only be changed through identification in government systems. The new service will allow age verification both when ordering online and when paying at the checkout. To do this, the user must register in the Unified Biometric System and agree to the use of their data.
