Currently, emergency services use satellite imagery to detect fires only after they have reached the size of a football pitch. The new project will detect fires in their early stages and provide updated data every 20 minutes. This will help firefighters respond more effectively before the fires become large and destructive.
The project is part of the Earth Fire Alliance, a nonprofit organization founded in May to develop FireSat and collect fire data. In addition to supporting emergency services, FireSat data will be used to create a global historical archive of fire spread to help model and understand fire behavior.
