The labels will be based on Coalition for Content Fairness and Authentication (C2PA) metadata, which tracks the origin of images (including when and where they were created). Google supports the C2PA standard, along with industry giants Microsoft, Adobe, and OpenAI.

For context, a study conducted by Sumsub found that AI fraud is set to increase by 245% between 2023 and 2024.
