Lupo Pasini noted that new alloys are needed to provide high performance at very high temperatures and maintain the mechanical properties required for complex nuclear facilities. Traditionally, tungsten has been used in such materials, but its properties have proven insufficient for reliable protection.

Scientists have overcome the challenge of finding new metal combinations using AI, identifying three elements to test as potential alloys. However, creating an AI database is only the first part of the project. The data will be used for further research to develop and train machine learning models for materials discovery and design.

The team’s next step is to use the findings to accelerate analysis of possible alloys that could lead to technological breakthroughs in the field of fusion energy.
