US authorities believe that devices that connect cars to the Internet and cloud services make them potential targets for hacking. The law is intended to protect the privacy of American drivers.

President Joe Biden’s administration launched an investigation into Chinese automotive software cybersecurity in March. The future bill will reportedly be based on its findings.

Bloomberg explains that US officials are concerned about the possibility of remotely intercepting vehicle control or collecting information with its help.

The ban will be implemented in several stages: the rules will come into force in January next year after a month-long public comment period.

Earlier this month, the WSJ published remarks by Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley after a series of working visits to China. The CEO of the American auto giant called Chinese manufacturers an “existential threat” and added that competitors from the Middle Kingdom “are moving at the speed of light.”
