Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as “great news for the space sector” that could make India the third largest space power by 2030s: “Great news for the space sector! Cabinet approves first step towards setting up Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) by expanding Gaganyaan programme! This landmark decision brings us closer to a self-sufficient space station by 2035 and a manned moon mission by 2040!” he tweeted.
Key projects include the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, with a crewed flight planned for late 2025, and the Bharatiya Antariksh station, scheduled for completion by 2035. The government has committed more than $1.3 billion to the Gaganyaan programme, which includes funding for additional test flights and the space station’s first module.
Additionally, the NGLV programme is expected to create a breakthrough in India’s launch capabilities with a reusable launch vehicle that will be operational by 2033. The programme aims to enhance both national and commercial missions.
