Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hopes to build successful open source platforms over the next decade. In a podcast interview Acquired last Wednesday (18), The manager explained his ideas for the future.
“Part of my goal over the next 10 to 15 years is to build the next generation of platforms, the next generation of open platforms, and make them winners,” Zuckerberg said. “I think that will lead to a much more vibrant tech industry,” he continued.
This isn’t Zuckerberg’s first flirtation with the open source industry: Most of the company’s AI models are available to developersLike Llama 2.
In July of this year, the CEO also took a stance against closed ecosystems, specifically citing Apple as an example. “There’s always going to be something [ecossistema] “There are reasons to have both, there are benefits to both. But overall, I believe there is a lot of value in having software that is more open for a computing platform, which is where the industry is focused right now,” he said.
In the same interview where he talked about his focus on open source, Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that he perceived Apple and Meta as “opposite” companies.
What are the advantages of closed software?
Closed source software, also known as proprietary software, do not make source code publicThis philosophy tends to give the technology owner more control, as well as guarantee greater security for the developer and users of the application.
A good example is Apple’s systems: much of the company’s software, such as iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and native ecosystem apps, are closed source.
Backwards, Ecosystems developed in open source tend to be richer in diversity and progress faster. The Linux kernel is a classic example of this approach and is available in billions of devices today.
However, open source and proprietary applications can coexist in the same ecosystem, and this strategy is being adopted by many companies. THE Apple itself maintains open source projects; and Meta’s social media applications (Instagram and WhatsApp) are proprietary.
So far Zuckerberg didn’t say how he planned to invest in the open source marketor whether their existing products will undergo transformations to adapt to the new philosophy.
