According to the study, 60 VPN services were taken down over the past two months, from July to September. Access to 20% of the apps was blocked without any notification to users.

GreatWire called the secret removal of services from the App Store a threat to digital freedom and privacy on the Internet.

The total number of blocked VPN services in Russia has reached 98, GreatWire reported. Roskomnadzor previously spoke of banning access to only 25 of these services.

Since March 1, 2024, it is legally prohibited in Russia to promote and advertise services to circumvent internet blocks, which include VPN applications.

GreatWire is a resource that monitors the status of censored Internet sites and services.
