Founded in 1969 as a subsidiary of Golden United Life Insurance, CompuServe became the first major Internet information services provider, providing early adopters with access to e-mail, online newspapers, and file-sharing capabilities.
Initially focused on businesses, CompuServe entered the consumer market in 1979 through a partnership with RadioShack. Acquired by H&R Block in 1980, the platform quickly became known for its innovative features, including chat forums. Despite stiff competition from Prodigy and AOL in the 1990s, CompuServe remained a major player until it was acquired by AOL in 1997.
As the memorial emphasizes, CompuServe’s contributions laid the foundation for the hyperconnected digital world we live in today.
