Navigation and location platform Google Maps is implementing new policies to catch businesses with fake reviews. The changes are already in place in the UK and are expected to be rolled out globally soon.
The company’s goal find places with artificial engagement, manipulated ratings, and clearly fraudulent reviews — especially when it comes to compliments. To do this, it will use undisclosed mechanisms that detect the use of fake accounts, multiple profiles, or copied text.
Besides, Sites that promise discounts or other benefits in exchange for a positive review will also be penalized.because it is a way of manipulating the spontaneous review system.
What happens to the venue where fake reviews are made?
Journalist Mike Blumenthal came across one such warning. The sign is clearly visible below basic information about the establishment, such as opening hours.
Organizations with questionable reviews that were removed by Google Will be marked on maps and punished with some loss on the platform.
In addition to the warning to customers, Google Prevents the site from receiving new reviews for a certain period of time and keeps previously published notes invisible also for a while. There are no details in the rules about how long such penalties will be applied by the service.
Business owners are informed about the implementation of the penalty via email, but it is also possible to appeal the decisions and request a review from the company.
