A series of movements at the top OpenAI can change the reason for being in the house forever ChatGPT. This Wednesday, September 25, the company’s technical director Mira Muratisigned a resignation letter.

In a note shared with the company and later published on Twitter/X, Mira Murati wrote that she was leaving the tech company. “After much consideration, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI (…). I am leaving because I want to free up time and space for my own research,” he said.

Sam Altman had kind words for Murati, who wrote during difficult times, to say that he was leaving. “I look forward to what he does next.”

OpenAI’s transformation into a commercial company

With restructurings such as Murati’s departure, the San Francisco-based startup is reportedly preparing to change its corporate structure as it seeks $6.5bn (£4.9bn) in fresh funding.

Under the changes, OpenAI will become a for-profit corporation committed to social and public good, no longer controlled by its non-profit board, Reuters reports.

An OpenAI spokesperson told The Guardian what impact the move would have on OpenAI.

“We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone, and we are working with our board to ensure we are best positioned to succeed in our mission. “This nonprofit is central to our mission and will continue to exist,” the spokesperson said.

OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit in 2015, and four years later it added a for-profit subsidiary, with Microsoft as its largest investor. On its website, OpenAI describes its structure as “a partnership between our original nonprofit and a new limited-profit entity.”
