Of the FAA’s 138 ATC systems, 51 are considered unsustainable due to parts shortages, lack of funding and inadequate support for technology upgrades. Additionally, 54 systems are classified as “potentially vulnerable”.

GAO highlights the urgent need for modernization of 17 systems that are particularly critical. Worryingly, experts are aware that the earliest completion of these critical upgrades is planned for 2030, with some systems projected to remain obsolete until 2035. Four of these systems currently have no modernization plans, and some are over 40 years old.
