In 2023, authors such as comedian Sarah Silverman and science fiction writer Paul Tremblay filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the company trained a neural network on their content. The court did not find a direct copyright violation, but this did not satisfy the plaintiffs, who filed a repeated and adjusted claim.

The new complaint says OpenAI’s actions fall within the definition of “unfair competition” because the books were used without the authors’ permission. On September 24, the court ruled that the authors’ lawyers would have access to OpenAI’s training data. They will be able to study information in a special secure room without Internet or electronic devices, with maximum security measures.

According to The Register, OpenAI does not explain the reasons for such strict measures, but it is assumed that this may be due to the risk of additional lawsuits.

On September 25, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati left the company after 6.5 years. Chief Scientific Officer Bob McGrew and Vice President of Research Barrett Zoph also left. OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman said the three made the decision to leave independently.
