Pacemakers are special cells that not only contract but also transmit control signals that maintain the rhythm of heart contractions. If their functions are impaired, doctors often have to install a pacemaker. Scientists aim to replace these devices with natural cells grown from the patient’s own cells.
The project, which started at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics SB RAS, joined forces with the MIPT laboratory to develop technology to produce pacemaker cells. Doctors can now place cells on a biodegradable substrate, minimizing injury and inflammation.
