China’s annual spending on fusion research is about $1.5 billion, nearly twice that of the U.S. With ten times more PhDs in fusion science than the United States, China is rapidly expanding its capabilities, raising concerns among American officials and scientists.

Led by institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China is prioritizing the industrialization of fusion technology, building tokamaks and forming a national consortium aimed at achieving commercial fusion power.
