While CEO Arvind Krishna has announced plans to replace 7,800 jobs with AI, employees say the technology is not yet ready to take on these tasks.
Insiders using the pseudonyms Alex, Blake and Casey say the company has been committed to automation and building AI-based tools for many years. However, these initiatives have not yet reached the point where they can effectively replace workers. “IBM doesn’t want people to work for it,” says Alex, noting the frequent layoffs.
Further complicating IBM’s efforts is the loss of experienced technologists—people who can turn the AI vision into reality. The company’s efforts to have the AI write code and learn from senior programmers have so far failed to bear fruit.
