The technique, published in the journal Nature Chemical Engineering, uses FJH chlorination to remove important metals such as gallium, indium and tantalum from e-waste.

Unlike traditional recycling methods that use energy-intensive processes and harmful chemicals, the new method allows for precise temperature control and rapid removal of metals without water or acid, making it more environmentally friendly. The process achieved over 95% purity and 85% yield, opening up hopes of recovering lithium and rare earth elements.
