Google has confirmed that Gemini Nano will be available for all apps in the Android ecosystem, after being announced for a select set of apps in December 2023. The source is an LLM (Large Language Model) that uses AI natively on smartphones.
Simply put, Gemini Nano acts like a scaled-down version of the Mountain View company’s standard assistant. The technology found in smartphone lines like the Pixel 9 and Galaxy S24 is only similar to Pixel Recorder, Google Messages, etc. It can be used in basically any application, not just Google software.
This will only be possible thanks to the technology’s Google AI Edge SDK program, which has recently been made available to developers. Thus, developers of various applications will be able to test Gemini Nano and create interactions.
Initially, this functionality was only available on Pixel 9, but the company will soon expand this feature to other smartphones.
Text functions only
Those responsible for the software will be able to customize how the Nano responds to applications, but for now only in text-to-text operations. The company reports that it will add compatibility for other methods, such as images and videos, in the future.
With Gemini Nano integrated into applications, users can request actions such as text summarization, smart replies, rephrasing and content review.
The most interesting thing about the technology is that it does not depend on an internet connection as it works natively on mobile phones. According to Google, this also helps protect the privacy of user data.
