According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the damages can be compensated with funds from the American bank The Bank of New York Mellon (BNY Mellon) and JP Morgan Chase Bank in their accounts in Russia. In favor of Sberbank, as part of “partial compensation for damages”, they plan to recover more than 6 billion rubles held by BNY Mellon in special Russian accounts. The remaining funds will be received from JPMorgan accounts.
Among the defendants in the Prosecutor General’s Office lawsuit, filed with the Arbitration Court of the Moscow Region on September 30, also include the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC), the National Bank of Ukraine and the state company National Investment Fund. from Ukraine.
The National Bank of Ukraine revoked MR-Bank’s license on February 25, 2022, after which the bank was liquidated. Subsequently, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine confiscated shares owned by Sberbank, as well as an asset by virtue of the right to claim debt to MR-Bank in the amount of almost 35 billion rubles.
The Russian agency demands recognition that the actions of the defendants to confiscate the property of MR-Bank violate the legitimate rights and interests of Russia. The case indicates that the defendants carried out illegal restrictions that affected the country’s national interests.
