Fake profiles of major streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ have been created on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram in an attempt to practice and spread fraud on social media. With nearly 500 fake accounts, criminal settings already has more than 654 thousand followers and 2.5 million likes.
These fake pages, recently detected by the dfndr lab of digital security company PSafe, have been hacked by cybercriminals. Offer fake free subscriptions to streaming platformsby completing a registration on a fake website created to capture personal information and spread malware.
How does scam work and how do you protect yourself?
According to Emilio Simoni, PSafe’s chief security manager, links that redirect victims to this site come in fake profiles, as well as messages via SMS, apps or email. “Pages ask for personal data such as name, CPF, address, phone number, and may even ask for credit card or bank account data,” says the expert.
By filling in a “registration form” with your personal information to receive the so-called free subscription code, victims are actually feeding a database for future fraud. Possible criminal acts include stealing profiles on social networks, cloning credit cards and even taking personal loans.
The main tip to protect yourself: always be wary of promotions that offer above-average benefits! Also, check out any promotions available directly on the official websites of streaming platforms, and above all, never click or share links from unknown sources, especially if they are received on messaging apps or social networks.
