A study published in the journal Autism Research found that certain regions of the cerebral cortex involved in memory, learning and reasoning in children with autism had lower neuron density compared to the general population. On the other hand, neuron density was observed to increase in emotion-related areas such as the amygdala. The fact that these differences remained unchanged even when compared to children with ADHD or anxiety disorders suggests that the changes are specific to autism.
