Telegram has added a feature to verify phone numbers via Messenger. This number confirmation method is 50 times cheaper than via SMS, according to the project description.

The essence of the Telegram Gateway function is that a client of any service will receive a phone number verification code not by SMS, but in Telegram.
The cost of verifying a phone number is fixed and amounts to $0.01 per code; per SMS would cost up to $0.5, Telegram calculated. Additionally, in Telegram the code is sent instantly, while SMS delivery may take time.
“Because we have already verified the phone numbers of almost a billion people, other companies can avoid the high costs of verification. And if the phone number they want to verify is not associated with a Telegram account, we will not charge you anything,” says the project description.

Since Telegram maintains the confidentiality of registered phone numbers, users of the service who have joined the project must give their consent to process their data and receive messages on Telegram.
