According to a recent study, moderate drinkers are more likely to experience drinking problems than heavy drinkers. At the same time, under moderate drinkers, the scientists figured out who consumed an average of one serving of alcohol per day throughout the week. In total, experts interviewed 1229 people aged 30+. The survey was conducted first in 2004-2005, then in 2015-2016.

Scientists asked people how many times a month they drank alcohol: more precisely, whether they consumed five or more servings of alcoholic beverages in a short period of time. Moderate drinkers drank an average of one drink per day, but more than 70 percent of the time they drank five or more drinks per week. This means that most likely drank too much alcohol at one time.

A study nine years later showed that moderate drinkers had problems with alcohol in 80% of cases. Moreover, these were both psychological problems and problems related to alcohol tolerance.

The results of the study also showed that moderate drinkers who abused alcohol were almost five times more likely to develop alcohol-related problems. Nine years later, these participants were more than twice as likely to develop a range of health problems overall than those who did not abuse alcohol.
