They said that Kaspersky Lab specialists recorded a sharp increase in fraudulent activity during the Olympic Games. Scammers stole users’ credentials and money en masse. People were redirected to phishing sites that supposedly sold game tickets, offered products with Olympic symbols and even Olympic medals.

“Criminals often use major events such as the Olympic Games to attract money and steal personal data. <...> Our participation in the Interpol initiative helped strengthen security measures and take proactive and timely measures to protect users and society as a whole,” said Yulia Shlychkova, vice president of government relations at Kaspersky Lab.

Interpol Cybercrime Director Neil Jetton highlighted that international cooperation played an important role in combating cyber threats at the Olympic Games. “Interpol has worked closely with vendors such as Kaspersky Lab, as well as participating countries, to protect athletes, spectators and critical infrastructure,” he said.

France suffered 68 cyberattacks during the Olympic Games, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said in August. He noted that all of the attacks, including two aimed directly at Olympic venues, “were detected and stopped in time.” The two targets of the attack were the Bercy sports complex and La Villette park, the prime minister said.

In June, the United States imposed sanctions on all senior management at Kaspersky Lab; As of July 20, Americans are prohibited from transacting with the company and, as of September 29, the sale and use of its products. On July 16, the company announced that it was closing its operations in the United States after almost 20 years of presence in the American market.

In early October it emerged that Kaspersky Lab would close its UK office and lay off local employees. The company’s customers in the kingdom will be able to continue working with the European team, developer spokesperson Francesco Thius told TechCrunch.
