The researchers’ approach, described in the journal Nature Photonics, involves using quantum states in these synthetic lattices. This method allows unprecedented control over the evolution of photon emission, resulting in improved detection rates, increased photon hits and overall system efficiency, the scientists noted. “This work allows us to use the concept of synthetic photonic measurements to study many quantum phenomena at a fundamental level and apply them to quantum technologies,” explains study co-author Stefania Sciara.

The implications of this discovery are far-reaching: new possibilities for processing quantum information, including quantum computing, quantum metrology and secure quantum communications. The researchers’ system, based on fiber optic devices, is compatible with existing telecommunications infrastructure.
