The study examined the effects of meditation on chronic lower back pain and found that men relied primarily on endogenous opioids, the body’s natural painkillers, to relieve pain. In contrast, women appear to use alternative non-opioid means for pain management.
The study included 98 participants and evaluated pain relief through meditation while blocking the opioid system with naloxone, a drug that stops both synthetic and natural opioids. The results were interesting: Blocking the opioid system reduced meditation-induced pain in men but increased it in women.
What’s more, people with chronic pain experienced greater relief from meditation compared to healthy participants.
