According to experts from Flinders University, teenagers are generally more prone to depression. This is due to both their biological and psychological characteristics. The results of a new study published in Nature Reviews Psychology show that it is the combination of these two factors that predisposes adolescents to develop a depressive disorder.

Dr Sele Richardson, a graduate of Flinders University and a lecturer at the University of Western Australia, points out that adolescents have a slower circadian rhythm (i.e. “biological clock”), limited sleep time and more negative thoughts when trying to sleep. Adolescents are known to go to bed very late and sleep very little in general.

Scientists have found that the development of depression in adolescents is not affected by night and evening smartphone use, but by other factors. These factors represent changes in the development of human biological systems responsible for sleep and wakefulness.

For example, drowsiness during the day in adolescents increases more slowly than others. This means they have to go to bed late and get up early to go to school. As a result, they are unable to sleep for the optimal 9.3 hours, which can exacerbate depressive symptoms. In addition to delayed circadian rhythms, it is difficult for young people to fall asleep due to negative thoughts and anxiety while trying to sleep.
