ByteDance said in a statement that the intern was fired in August for serious disciplinary violations. He deliberately interfered with the training of the AI language models used in the research project.

The BBC reported that the damage caused by the alleged sabotage could have reached $10 million: the intern allegedly introduced viruses and modified key elements of the infrastructure. ByteDance told The Guardian that the information about the amount of damage was not true.

ByteDance is developing the Doubao chatbot, a competitor to ChatGPT from the American OpenAI. In terms of capabilities, the neural network has already surpassed the chatbot Ernie from the Chinese manufacturer Baidu, writes The Guardian.

Doubao, in particular, is built into the Ola Friend headphones, which the company introduced in October.

Reuters previously wrote that TikTok plans to lay off several hundred employees involved in content moderation due to the active implementation of AI.
