How helpful would it be for you to know the salary for this position, or at least the potential salary range, before going through the entire application and interview process? That’s what AI is for.

Employers are obviously reluctant to disclose salaries at the application stage, but researchers at Stanford’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute are helping overcome this barrier with AI so potential employees can decide for themselves what to expect. job openings deserve your attention.

The process involves training an AI on a dataset of more than a million job postings, allowing it to “use text from job listings to assess salary-related job performance in near real time.”

It does this with an accuracy of 87%, compared to 69% using only job posting titles and location.

A study of 6,000 professionals in the UK found that 81% of us cite salary as the most important factor when looking for a new job, but the issue of transparency about potential earnings remains. Employers just don’t want to tell you about salaries, even though salaried job postings tend to produce twice as many successful candidates.

The BBC reports that in 2019, only 12.6% of companies globally disclosed salary ranges in job postings.

This number is growing, but not fast enough. The report goes on to explain that companies that “are honest about their pay can attract better and more diverse talent, making pay transparency a powerful way to create a fairer workplace.”

This year, on International Women’s Day, the UK government announced an initiative to improve the transparency of the application process to help women negotiate fairer wages. So at least steps are being taken in the right direction. But what if there was a way to predict salaries just by looking at the wording on a job posting?

Sarah Bana of the Stanford Digital Economy Laboratory is among those training AI to predict such wages. Her research shows that because “the text in job postings is written in common language,” it is quite possible to predict her salary using a method called “transfer learning.”

In essence, AI could give potential employees a better chance of choosing jobs instead of applying for everything just to get frustrated. She says this “will make job applications more transparent and improve our approach to educating and training the workforce.”
