Users will have a license to use avatars on Reddit and beyond.
Soon, Reddit users will be able to decorate their profiles and support active artists on the platform by purchasing collectible avatars. The collectible avatars represent “one of the first steps” in testing the benefits of using blockchain technology on the platform, Reddit said in a press release.
The avatars are backed by the Polygon blockchain and owners will be licensed to use them on Reddit and beyond.
Soon, users will be able to purchase any number of 87 avatars. Early access to select members of the CollectibleAvatars subreddit begins Thursday. Avatars will be purchased where people currently customize their avatars and stored in their vault, a digital wallet where users now store community points. Reddit reports that more collectible avatars will be released in the future.
According to Reddit, artists will be paid every time their avatar is purchased and are entitled to royalties on any secondary sales.
The launch comes at a time when other blockchain-related products such as NFTs and cryptocurrencies, while different from the ups and downs of Reddit, are facing some of the greatest uncertainties and volatility in their history. According to the press release, Reddit sees blockchain technology “as a way to empower and empower communities on Reddit,” citing the decentralized nature of Reddit communities “created and managed by themselves.”
