In some movies, it’s clear from the start who the antagonist is, but in many thrillers or mysteries, the identity of the villain is usually revealed towards the end of the movie. However, if we talk about modern cinema, there is a fairly reliable way to determine who is the villain and who is not, even at the beginning of the viewing.
The secret is in the technique used by the characters, that is, Apple products. The latter strictly controls the use of your laptops, smartphones and tablets in the framework. In practice, this means that any character in a movie or series can be viewed with an Android smartphone, but not every ̶d̶o̶s̶t̶o̶i̶n̶ can hold an iPhone.
Only the good ones use the iPhone
If you can’t think of a popular movie villain using an iPhone, iPad, and/or Mac to accomplish his nefarious goals, it’s not an accident, but a strict marketing tactic by Apple. It aims to preserve the brand image and maintain a favorable perception of the company’s products among the masses.
And not some fan-made conspiracy theory: The secret was revealed by director Rian Johnson, who helmed films like Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Netflix’s hit detective Knives Out.
While reporting on a scene from Knives Out, Rian Johnson mentioned that Apple doesn’t allow directors to put any of the company’s products in the hands of movie villains or their minions. He clarified that in general Apple does not prevent the appearance of its electronics in the frame, but puts one of the aforementioned conditions.
By the way, if you have not yet seen Knives Out, knowing this secret will be a kind of “spoiler”, which will undoubtedly spoil the impression of the film. As you may have guessed, the film’s antagonist does not use an iPhone, unlike all the other main characters. In this picture, smartphones often shone in the frame – they showed the time for a correct understanding of the chronology. This makes it pretty easy to figure out which suspect to watch out for.
It’s about brand image.
Apple’s reluctance to share its technology with movie villains is not surprising, given that the brand has always tried to maintain an impeccably clean image, avoiding any controversy or scandal as much as possible. At the same time, Apple loves putting its best devices in the hands of the good guys. For example, in 2002, a Wired reporter noted that in the popular thriller 24, all the good guys used Mac computers to complete their missions.
Apple is quite adamant about its reputation and has even developed a legal framework for content that represents its intellectual property. One of the key points is this: “Apple’s product is displayed only at its best, in a context that reflects favorably on Apple or Apple Inc. products.”
