Fresh onions have been identified as the likely source of an E. coli outbreak at McDonald’s in the United States, Reuters writes, citing the US Department of Agriculture. Earlier this week, one person died and nearly 50 were injured after eating McDonald’s burgers suspected of being contaminated with E. coli.

Yum, which operates the KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell chains, also decided to remove onions “out of an abundance of caution.” The vegetable has also disappeared from the menu of at least one Burger King restaurant in Colorado, Reuters writes.
The poisonings, as previously reported, were recorded in 10 states, with the majority of cases occurring in Colorado. McDonald’s supplier Taylor Farms recalled several lots of yellow onions produced at a plant in the state following the incident.
Currently, the U.S. Department of Health continues to determine whether onions are the source of the E. coli outbreak.
All of the victims, after eating McDonald’s burgers suspected of being contaminated with E. coli O157, ate the Quarter Pounder, a version of the Royal Cheeseburger previously sold in Russia.
