As noted by the press service of the regulator, before issuing a new 1,000 ruble banknote, its symbols will be discussed with the experts of the advisory council and residents, and then proceed to the development of the design. After this, work will begin on banknotes of other denominations, including 500, 50 and 10 rubles, which will also delay their release.

In 2024, according to plans to modernize the 1997 series of banknotes, the Central Bank was to issue an updated 500-ruble banknote with the monuments of the North Caucasus Federal District. The items for the updated banknotes will be chosen based on the results of the popular vote.

Independent expert Andrei Barhota also sees nothing critical in postponing the issuance of updated banknotes. He noted that the 500-ruble note is less popular than the thousand-ruble note, so the priority in question is fully justified. According to the Central Bank, the proportion of 500 ruble banknotes in circulation is only 7%, while thousandth banknotes account for 20%, Barhota added.

The 500 ruble banknote is dedicated to Arkhangelsk. On the front side of the banknote there is a monument to Peter the Great (by MM Antokolsky) and a sailing ship against the background of a sea and river station, and on the reverse side there is a view of the Solovetsky Monastery.
