At the request of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, to sell smartphones in the country, Apple must localize its production by 40%. Apple also promised to invest 1.7 trillion Indonesian rupiah (10.54 billion rubles at the Central Bank exchange rate as of October 28, 2024) in the local economy, but only invested 1.5 trillion rupiah (about 9.3 billion rubles), the publication notes.
According to the department, there are around 9,000 iPhone 16s in Indonesia today, imported by individuals. These devices are permitted for personal use only and are not for sale.
As noted by Kita Indonesia Satu, sales of the iPhone 16 will be allowed after Apple meets its investment obligations in Indonesia.
The company must obtain TKDN (Tingkat Komponen Dalam Negeri), an Indonesian certificate that confirms the level of local content in products manufactured or sold in Indonesia. It is mandatory that certain categories of products, including electronics, stimulate local production and attract investments into the country’s economy. Devices such as smartphones and tablets require a minimum of 40% localization, which may include the use of local components, assembly or development in Indonesia.
