Surprisingly, the title of “most animal of Canada” belongs to the soft-shelled turtle (Apalone spinifera), not the beaver or deer. In the research, the evolutionary history of 222 mammals, 674 birds, 48 amphibians and 49 reptiles was examined.
The top five most evolutionarily unique animals also include the salamander (amphibian), elgaria (reptile), opossum (mammal) and belted kingfisher (bird). Each of these species has a long evolutionary lineage.
The results, the scientists wrote, underscore the importance of protecting these unique species, especially in the face of threats such as climate change and habitat destruction.
Despite these results, the beaver still retains its status as a symbol of the country: two species are included in the list.
