Heart disease remains the leading cause of premature death worldwide, and although risk factors such as diabetes and smoking are well known, the molecular mechanisms affecting MI risk are still not fully understood.
For the analysis, scientists used data from more than 60,000 participants from Sweden and the United Kingdom, observing them for eight years. The study found that processes such as atherosclerosis, inflammation, and immune system functioning play an important role in the development of a heart attack. For example, high levels of renin and follistatin were associated with increased risk, while tissue factor inhibitor and placental growth factor, on the contrary, reduced the likelihood of heart attack.
Scientists state that the differences in biological mechanisms between men and women should be taken into account in the development of preventive and therapeutic measures.
