Mycosis fungoides is characterized by the appearance of red patches, plaques and nodules on the skin that can ulcerate. These symptoms can be intensely itchy and resemble the fungal caps that give the disease its name. According to Olga Olisova, director of the Clinic for Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases at Sechenov University, the disease can develop over years, but timely diagnosis significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.
Scientists improved diagnostic methods by analyzing the microRNA level in patients’ blood. MicroRNAs found in body cells play key roles in biological processes. Changes in their expression may indicate that a healthy cell has transformed into a tumor cell.
