The system analyzes eight indicators of biodiversity and ecosystem services important to humans, according to a recent study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. The tool can provide more transparent and verifiable environmental, social and corporate responsibility (ESG) metrics than many other approaches.

Scientists have found that companies in sectors such as energy, real estate and finance have the biggest impact on the environment. For example, the analysis was applied to lithium mines, which are important for the transition to renewable energy sources. Using satellite imagery, researchers evaluated how mine locations affect environmental services such as water quality and flood protection.

The developed tool allows not only to identify negative consequences for nature, but also to suggest more sustainable business solutions.
