Mode running down the streetwhich is built into the standard application Workout on Apple Watch it looks like a simple button.
In fact, it is so insightful and sophisticated that Apple could release it as a standalone program and, without joking, talked for 30 minutes about all the useful features at the next presentation.
I have been running for more than 8 years, and after buying a watch for training, I no longer obligatoryliterally a fun activity every time.
Below I will tell you why it is so good, why there simply cannot be an alternative, and at present it is difficult to be considered a direct competitor from Nike, literally a sports company.

If you start a standard training program and next to the card Run outside Imagine Ellipsis reveals a large list of goals that runners can track.
When I bought the watch in 2021, I didn’t see any difference between the modes. Running any interface, the runs looked the same and the differences were only in the type standard.
But over the past two years, Apple has redrawn the interface, made it clear, and thus added useful features that allow you to turn the watch into an analytical tool for various tasks.
The application is adapted to the goals: lose weight, improve breathing, improve strength.
The Apple Watch comes pre-installed with 8 different operating modes, each of which has its own visual differences.
Free. Turn it on and run, looking at the preset metrics. In my opinion, the ideal regime if you are just starting to run.
Route racing. It doesn’t appear right away, but it’s my favorite mode. After a couple, sometimes three runs in the same place, the watch memorizes the map, spending time on the route, pace and efficiency of a ghost opponent, like in Need For Speed, with whom you can compete next time for the first time.
Kilocalories. Press the pencil Enter how many calories you burn and exercise at any pace. You will show the clock yourself when everything is done, but you can also check it yourself in the metrics while running.
Distance. Also take a pencil Set the desired distance and whiteness.
Target temp. A very smart thing, and even though it seems simple. It is calculated based on two indicators: how much you want to run and at what time, if you want, to do it without taking a step. Brilliant!
Professional runners who want to consistently run at one pace have special people who run ahead of them at that pace. They are called pacemakers or “hares.”
Apple Watch turn off tempo Replace such a person. In addition to a clear image on the screen with a lag and feathering, you will receive.
Time. More for people by inspiration, everything is clear here. We enter how long we want to run and move at any pace, taking into account distances and calories.
Custom. Everything is interesting here. The mode is new and will help those who are just starting to design. Here you can set any set of intervals, set by time, distance or at a random pace, which change automatically or manually (as determined) as you progress during your workout.
Racing mode screen
For example, when I was just learning to design, some application included a period of interval running, which allowed me, in principle, to master this physical activity. Only here there is more freedom, although you need it yourself.
There is another mode, track detector. But he has nothing to do with me. I guess because my particular track is woven into the territory of the park and does not include clock algorithms. Also, the function can only work in countries where Apple maps have recognized and processed open tracks.
As you can see, the list is for almost every taste, the only thing missing is special options for the marathon. But for this there is a standard running mode, for which you can configure as many as 7 screens of different metrics.
Flexible clock in running metrics that show the screen. For example, 5 types of tempo
If on the way Training > Ellipsis scroll below all modes, there will be a button Settings. Here are the options for measuring heart rate zones, target pace, cadence (cadence), power and much more.
But also by key Workout Information A menu with metrics opens, which is visible during the workout.
The configuration of this screen during operation is as flexible as possible. You can have one screen with all the information, or you can have all eight. You can put metrics on two of them in any order and whatever you want from the available ones.
11 characteristics available for identification:
• Vertical oscillations the altitude of the flight phase appears. The lower, the more strength to move forward
• Contact time with the ground displays how many milliseconds the feet are in contact with the ground with each step
• Lifting height or go down to the area. You can select current or relative to the start of the workout.
• Distance running current, for a segment or segment.
Apple Watch workouts have an idea segment And segment.
You define the segment yourself by double tapping anywhere on the application screen. Training in training mode.
During sections, workouts are connected automatically; the parameter can be set in kilometers along the route. Training > Ellipsis > Settings > Segment.
• Step length current and average training.
• Duration A time segment or period is used to identify one’s forces.
• Cadence indicates how many steps are taken per minute.
• Active kilocaloriesRecommended specifically for training. You can select by entire workout or by segment.
• Total kilocaloriestargeted training and metabolism. You can select by entire workout or by segment.
• power tells how much the trend in watts continues to date. You can also choose an average for the entire workout.
• Pulse there is current, peak or average.
• Pace. There are five types: current, average, sliding, per segment (you determine it yourself by tapping on the screen) and per segment.
Sliding pace shows your speed over the last kilometer traveled at the current time. As our subscriber explained well Alexander: “If you have already run 1500 m, then this will be the average pace for distances from 500 meters to 1500 m.”
On Apple Watch Series 10, Ultra and Ultra 2 you can put five metrics on the screen, on the other four.
Convenient graphs of different indicators do not have a competitive advantage.
In addition, the screens themselves display data more informatively, unlike the same Nike; in different modes there are additional interfaces that perfectly balance between specialists and amateurs. This is why I love Apple.
U pulse zones clear color scheme, mode Race route And Target pace a visible manifestation of progress or a lag behind the goal in the form of a fragment colored green or red, interval training Prepares for the next stage in an expanded form and succinctly shows a modern modern look in a compact form.
Also like the screens rise And activitywhich shows the efforts in the last minutes in a beautiful graph. They help you better assess your condition relative to the load in the last kilometers. You see that you’ve run uphill without noticing, and you understand why you’re tired, for example.
Two gestures that few people know about
While I was preparing for the article, in every app review I saw complaints about the inability to skip the countdown cycle after starting a workout.
1️⃣ Countdown Can skip. Simply tap the screen again after starting the workout and it will begin recording instantly.
Another method appeared in the Apple Watch Ultra. On the watch in the Settings app > Workout > Precision Start [ВКЛ].
2️⃣ The second point is segment activation. Helpful when you’re going through a difficult section of a hill run, for example, or during strength training after a single exercise where you’ve run out of sets.
After training, the Nike program looks like a toy
See for yourself. The main screen meets the GO key. Okay, it motivates.
Before starting a run, you can scroll down and select the goal of your run: Distance, Time, Speed. In the first two there will be a progress bar during classes, the third visual is no different at all from the normal state.
While running, you can tap all three metrics to list calories, pace, cadence, distance, heart rate, and time.
That’s all. No fine tuning, no intervals, nothing.
Nike Run Club doesn’t even have signs to warn you if your heart rate is high or you’re going out of temperature.
The only positive thing I can mention is the window, which motivates me to make a weekly series. It looks cool and challenges the best Apple Watch system software.
There are also built-in free auditions in English, I counted 40 of them.
Built-in app reads tempo changes faster
Finally, we checked how quickly the programs track changes in tempo.
The experiment is carried out like this. I recorded the screen with the clock and simultaneously recorded the sound. I switched from walking to running and using the audiogram in Final Cut I checked how a fast walking pace (about 10 minutes/km) switched to running (about 4 minutes/km) compared to the actual transition from one to the other.
As a result, it turned out that the Workout app built into the Apple Watch displayed a change in pace after 6.23 secondsand in Nike through 9 seconds smooth. The third difference.
Apple, any expert
In the company’s Fitness app on iPhone after a workout, you can see even more indicators
If a person who is far from training opens all the parameters that can be tracked while running on Apple Watch, it will be scary.
But the Training application introduces you so smoothly that a real athlete becomes invisible to himself.
Anyone who started a project for the first time can simply click the “Start” button.
If you want to achieve results in distance, calories, and then speed, there are already ready-made modes for this that also encourage consistency.
The new Effort metric in watchOS 11 offers an effort rating after every workout, so your watch will better show how well you’re doing in the Fitness app.
And I’m considering tools for those who “go crazy” in terms of level metrics like flight phase, during contact with the ground, cadence and active calories.
In general, the company ultimately once again explained the complexities of ordinary people and made us all a little smarter. I can’t imagine how you can get off this application and use something else.
